Oral Hygiene at Home
What you do between visits matters more than anything we do in the chair. Here’s how to make it easy — even with arthritis or limited dexterity.

The Fundamentals
Brushing and Flossing, Done Properly
Brushing
Brush at least twice a day — and never skip bedtime, when saliva flow drops and bacteria do the most damage. Use a soft bristle brush (medium and hard brushes damage gums and wear roots). Angle the bristles at about 45 degrees toward the gumline and use small, gentle circles rather than hard scrubbing. Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, the chewing surfaces, and then your tongue — tongue brushing alone can cut bad breath significantly.
Flossing
A toothbrush cannot reach between your teeth, and those surfaces are highly prone to decay and gum disease. Use about 12–16 inches of floss wound around your middle fingers, guide it gently between the teeth, then curve it into a C shape against each tooth and move it up and down beneath the gumline. Never snap it down onto the gums.
If Your Hands Give You Trouble
Arthritis, tremor or reduced grip make traditional flossing genuinely difficult — and that’s not a personal failing, it’s a design problem. These help enormously:

Aids That Make Daily Care Easier
- Electric toothbrush — does the motion for you, with a larger grip
- Floss holders and floss picks — no finger-winding required
- Water flosser — excellent around bridges, implants and dentures
- Interdental brushes — ideal for wider gaps and exposed roots
- Built-up or padded handles for a more secure grip

Is an electric toothbrush worth it?
For most adults, yes — particularly if grip or dexterity is a challenge. It provides consistent motion, has a thicker handle that’s easier to hold, and most models include a timer so you brush long enough.
I can’t manage regular floss. What should I use?
A water flosser or floss picks are excellent alternatives, and interdental brushes work very well where gums have receded. Any of these done daily beats traditional floss done never — bring it up at your visit and we’ll fit the tool to your hands.
