Why X-Rays Matter

Seeing What an Exam Alone Can’t

A visual exam shows us the surfaces of your teeth. X-rays show us everything else — decay starting between teeth, infection at a root tip, bone loss from gum disease, cysts, and the position of teeth that haven’t erupted. Many of these cause no pain at all until they’re advanced.

We use digital sensors rather than film. The image appears on screen in seconds, so we can review it together right there in the room, and the radiation dose is dramatically lower than old-fashioned film X-rays.

Is the Radiation Safe?

Digital dental X-rays deliver a very small dose — comparable to the natural background radiation you’d receive over a normal day or two of ordinary life. We also use a lead apron with a thyroid collar, and we only take the images we genuinely need. If you’ve had recent X-rays elsewhere, we’re happy to request them instead of repeating.

How Often Do I Need Them?

It depends on your history. Someone with healthy teeth and no recent decay may need bitewing X-rays only every 18–24 months, while someone managing gum disease or frequent cavities may need them more often. We’ll tell you why each image is needed — never just “because it’s time.”

Related Questions

Are dental X-rays safe for older adults?

Yes. Digital X-rays use a very low dose of radiation, and we shield you with a lead apron and thyroid collar. The small risk is far outweighed by the benefit of catching infection, decay or bone loss before it becomes a serious problem.

Can I refuse X-rays?

You can, and we’ll respect it — but there are limits to what we can diagnose or safely treat without them. We’ll explain exactly what we’re looking for and why, so you can make an informed decision.

Can you use X-rays from my previous dentist?

Often, yes. If they’re recent and good quality, we’re glad to request them so you don’t need new ones. Just give us your former dentist’s details and we’ll handle it.
