The Main Categories

Gingivitis

Inflammation limited to the gum tissue, with no bone loss. Gums are red, swollen and bleed easily. Fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care.

Chronic Periodontitis

By far the most common form in adults. Inflammation progresses below the gumline, pockets form, and bone is lost slowly over years. Usually painless. Managed with deep cleaning and ongoing maintenance.

Aggressive Periodontitis

Less common, and characterised by rapid bone loss in patients who may otherwise be clinically healthy. Often has a strong genetic component and needs prompt, intensive treatment.

Periodontitis Linked to Systemic Disease

Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and certain immune disorders can drive gum disease and make it progress faster. Coordinating dental and medical care matters here.

Necrotising Periodontal Disease

An uncommon, painful form involving tissue death, associated with severe immune compromise, malnutrition or extreme stress. Requires urgent care.

How do I know which type I have?

Through a periodontal evaluation — we measure pocket depths around each tooth, check for bleeding and recession, and review X-rays for bone loss. That gives a clear diagnosis and a specific plan.
