Ask Yourself These Questions

This is a prompt to seek an evaluation — not a diagnosis. Only a clinical exam with pocket measurements and X-rays can confirm gum disease.

Bleeding and Appearance

Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? Are they red, puffy or tender rather than firm and pale pink? Have they pulled back so your teeth look longer?

Breath and Taste

Do you have persistent bad breath or a bad taste that brushing doesn’t fix?

Teeth and Bite

Are any teeth loose, or have they shifted? Have new gaps appeared? Does your bite feel different, or does a partial denture fit differently than it used to?

Sensitivity and Discharge

Are your teeth newly sensitive to cold near the gumline? Have you seen pus, or noticed a bad taste when you press on the gums?

Your Risk Profile

Do you smoke or use tobacco? Do you have diabetes, heart disease, or a family history of tooth loss? Do you take medications that cause dry mouth? Has it been more than a year since your last cleaning?
