Gum Treatment
Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
The proven non-surgical treatment for gum disease — done comfortably with the area fully numbed.

Details
What a Deep Cleaning Actually Does
A routine cleaning removes deposits from the parts of your teeth above the gumline. When gum disease has created pockets, tartar and bacteria sit on the root surfaces below the gumline, where neither a toothbrush nor a routine cleaning can reach.
Scaling removes that hardened tartar and bacterial film from the root surfaces. Root planing smooths the roots so that bacteria can’t easily re-adhere and so the gum tissue can reattach snugly to the tooth.
What the Appointment Is Like
We numb the area thoroughly first — you’ll feel pressure and vibration but not pain. Treatment is usually split into two visits (one side of the mouth each) so no appointment is too long and you’re never numb all over at once. Each visit typically runs 45–90 minutes.
Afterwards
Gums may be tender for a day or two and teeth can be temporarily sensitive to cold. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually all that’s needed. Most people return to normal activities the same day. We’ll see you a few weeks later to re-measure and confirm the pockets have improved.

Why It Works
- Removes the infection at its source
- Lets gum tissue reattach to the tooth
- Reduces pocket depth so you can clean at home
- Avoids surgery for most patients

Related Questions
Does deep cleaning hurt?
No — the area is fully numbed. Most patients say it’s easier than they expected and comparable to having a filling. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Why does it take two visits?
So each appointment stays a reasonable length and you’re not numb across your whole mouth at once — which makes eating and drinking afterwards much easier. Some cases can be done in one visit if the disease is limited.
What happens if I don’t have it done?
The infection continues, pockets deepen, and bone loss progresses. Bone lost doesn’t come back. Deep cleaning is far simpler and less expensive than the tooth replacement that eventually follows untreated periodontitis.
